bike identification

hello guys i have already posted i am going to be getting a honda cb 750 1979 how do you tell which class id it is k/f/c etc, can you tell by the frame id # or how. Awesome site i will be posting my build log when i start with pics of course, when i learn how. Very Happy

There should be a boiler plate with all the info on the neck, and if you remove the plate, it is also stamped into the metal of the neck too.

two choices in 79 f or k

f had rear disc

k had rear drum

Not really. What is often mistakenly referred to as the 1979 CB750L is really the 1979 CB750K LTD. People started to call it a CB750L as a kind of shorthand, but it was really called a Limited Edition of the K model. Which is also interesting, because the 1980 CB750K looked almost exactly like the 79 LTD. As it turns out the 79 CB750K was the rare desirable one. Razz

I always thought it was because everybody wanted the new mag type wheels instead of spokes. Everybody was tired of spokes.

Below is what I copied from the fiche . I can see why anyone would think there was an L in 79 .

" Honda : CB750L A (79) MOTORCYCLE, JPN, VIN# RC01-3000006 TO RC01-3008810 "

You are right that the bike is officially called a Ltd K but it gets confusing for people when looking for parts etc. so most folks and parts suppliers refer to the Ltd K as an L. The L is a variant of the k and has some differences. Most K's have spoked wheels, the L has comstars. Most K's also have a new style tail light rear fender and cowl. the L has the old style rear fender, and tail light -same style as the 78 sohc. the color scheme is unique of course, and the emblems are unique as well. I cannot remember if there are other differences as well. a lot of things are similar or interchangable between them, as they are for the F. Smile

No, actually, the 79K has the boat tail and the hinged seat. It's the 79K LTD that has the new style tail light, seat, and fender. Razz
