New Here. Looking for a project bike

Hello folks. New to this forum, but not a total newb.

I have been away from bikes for years, but also work on vintage and late model mustangs. Recently moved up from FL to St Charles, IL.
My 21yr old son has been riding an '04 Honda 599 for a year (or so) and would like to build up a custom 'cafe racer' based on a CB750. So the plan is for us to find a project bike that we can work on together as a father-son project.
I think this is kind of funny, because this is how I started on my first bike back in the early 90's. I bought an '01 Suzuki GS750 that was apart in boxes for $350. I built it up on the cheap and rode it for a couple of years. Back then I never heard of a 'cafe racer', but thats pretty much what I built.

Anyway, please post any hints on best year of model we could start with. We have found a '79 K model, thats pretty much all there, but its not running. Seller insists its something sumple, but who knows. I am thinking that $400 is probably my best offer for a non-runner that might need an engine. Thoughts?

Please read through the New Member's Thread linked in my signature.

A K model is probably closest to what people call cafe as it has wire wheels and a rear drum brake. Keep the stock airbox. You will drive yourself batty trying to re-jet the stock carbs for pods.

The 750 K you speak of is as good a place to start as any.

Cave eagle, I might be selling my 750 due to another project coming up. If your interested send me a pm.. I have another bike it comes with for parts as well as a host of parts.
