Hey there. Wanted to say a quick hello. Am usually on dotheton.com, but decided to jump in on the bandwagon here for my dohc inquiries. I have a '82 CB900C, and recently got a mono-shock frame CB900F to cannibalize for parts.

A little bit of back story. I got my first bike, a CB350 last year spring and sort of did things backwards, cause I had never been on a bike before. Rebuilt the motor first, then learned how to ride after. Read the forums and shop manuals all the time, and bought the tools when I needed them.
Also ended up hording a lot of 350 parts. Have 3 other stripped down 350's, a little Honda Cub, and now the two 900's. (of course none of them work!) Wink

Anyways, was commuting 100 miles a couple days a week, so decided I needed something bigger. Picked up a CB900C for cheap. Only needed a caliper rebuild, and some front end work.

Story now is the gearbox is locked up. It starts and runs with the clutch pulled, but the rear wheel won't budge.

Anyways, that's my quick intro. More posts to come soon.

Cheers!

you need a signature, we also don't do pods on site [before you ask]

the first good read is our new member thread, it outlines our site and culture

many of our signatures include links to other tech notes and such

we also only allow 640x480 as image size, our server has enough to do without huge pictures
plus, today the internet can be reached with much anything that has a screen and a tiny key board

and our dial up users,me included, cannot view huge images, so to make our site fair to all users, we scale down image size

yours is too big, needs to be edited to 640x480

and our signature request saves confusion in tech postings as well Wink

Read the new member thread, but haha of course missed clicking the sig box for the comments.

Yea I've heard about the problem with pods, but so far it runs great, so no complaints here. Needs to be warmed up with the choke first though.

i can imagine

i believe
running okay
running well
running good or great
is still not running correctly

these old engines have a few ailments built in from new, burnt valves, broken cam chains, thrown rods from wrong oil or no oil

the correct maintenance, with the correct frame of mind about these engines can make a bike that can run for a long long time

running lean from pods can kill an engine over time, running rich from carb hole drilling and bigger jets is just as destructive

k/n > kill/now Razz

Have you determined whether it's the main transmission or the high-low transmission?

I havn't yet. I am really hoping it is the high/low transmission. Would prefer not to have to open up the engine if possible.

My suspicion is that it is the high/low, because the rear wheel is locked rock solid. If it was the main transmission, I would feel a little bit of a give I think.

Well I wish you luck with the issue... maybe you'll get lucky and find that it isn't either transmission and something way simpler to fix.

Yep yeah that

Never had one do that, but your logic is correct. Hard telling what's causing it, but it's probably not the 5-speed tranny.

You can remove the 2 speed without pulling the motor, one of the few power train items that is somewhat easy to get to, and it doesn't require pulling the motor.

There is a V-drive right angle on the right side of the jack shaft, too. Those are somewhat notorious for coming apart; not on these so much, but V-drives in general place a lot of explosive force on their gear cases. And of course there is a rear end and U-joints on the drive line that could also pack it in, if they haven't been looked after on occasion.

You need to investigate.

Well good news, which also comes with a word of caution to me. It wasn't the transmission at all, it was actually just the brake pads. The inside pad slipped and jammed between the rotor and the bracket from the tip over. Took just about a hour to fix.

Bad news is that I failed to notice. The pads were so worn, I basically had it coming. Pretty lucky the rear wheel didn't lock up while in motion. One pad chewed out and got bent up, the other is half worn half through the metal. Shocked Ordered replacement pads, but thinking of finding the right mounts to install some dual piston calipers I rebuilt.

Thanks for the tips! I'm glad that you can remove the hi/low separately from the motor. I was tinkering around with the bike, but couldn't figure out if that was even possible. Tranny fluid was good, still clear and no dirt!

Anyhow, greetings to everyone again. Glad to be on the forum. Hope to see some of you out on the road. Ride!
