new to the cb900c world

hello. i just did some swapping and ended up with a 1981 cb900c. i'm into it a couple hundred bucks. i got it running, but only on #'s 3 & 4 cyls. i've been doing alot of research on this bike. i have a factory service manual for it. from what i can gather, it has been sitting for several years. it has a little over 12000 miles on it. in surprisingly good shape for the age. the right side exhaust is rotted out where they meet the mufflers. the left side must have been the same way, because someone patched it with a 2 and 1/2 to 2 exhaust pipe reducer. not pretty, but works. i'm going to patch the right side the same way for now. my 1st project, when money allows will be to clean and rebuild the carbs. till then, i'll patch the exhaust, and maybe pull the carbs and start cleaning them. i can see after reading posts on here, i'll be looking and finding answers to most, if not all my questions. thanks in advance for all the info and advice

A word of advice: Read all of the "Announcement" threads in this forum before you ask any more questions. It will show that you can follow directions, and people will be much more likely to assist you with problems. Then start with the sticky threads in the Technical Help forum - there's a great deal of good info there that will help you with the bulk of the issues you'll have.

Don't be afraid to use the search function. There's lots of information, all just a few mouse clicks away.

Welcome to the forum. Please read the forum rules in regards to use (Bold Green Link on Home Page) and comply.

One of which is to place a signature that includes the year and model of your bike for each post. Directions are contained in that thread.

i've been reading info on here for a week or so now. some nice info. i think i just got the signature thing working. i'm looking forward to getting this bike up and running. in '81 one of my riding buddies bought a cb900c brand new. i rode with him a lot, back in the day. back then i was riding a '79 yamaha 750 triple. i got a ticket on my buddies 900 for defective exhaust. we had pulled the baffle out of the header and he let me ride it form east texas back to dallas. i was doing about 110 when we met a state trooper sitting on the other side of the hi-way. the header was sure talking. he couldn't prove i was actually speeding, so i got a fix-it ticket. was a good time.

actually, i build custom cabinets. but my last name is carpenter, so the name just came to me long ago and i've just hung on to it. i'm torn about the cb900c i just got. i dont know why it was parked. not knowing that, i'm hesitant to sink a lot of money into it, untill i get it running. thats why i'll just patch the exhaust for now. i'm hoping that if i dont get into it for too much, and find major problems, i can still part it out to recoup my investment. crying shame when the parts out value the whole. like i said earlier, i rode a bike like this way back, and i'm kinda excited to have a chance to ride another one. thanks, for putting up with my ramblings

I use to build homes and did custom remodels . Smile

I wouldn't worry to much that it was anything major causing the bike to be parked . The basic motor is very robust . Clean the carbs ( be absolutely meticulous ) . They have to be pristine INSIDE . Spark on all 4 ? Compression ?

You'd do well to go through the checklist ( link in my sig ) .

well it just gets better and better. decided to do a compression check. ended up snapping #3 plug off. got it drilled out, but i cant get a grip on my ez-out. i sure dont want to pull my head, but i cant see any other way to remove the busted plug. debating on just parting it out. if i knew the history of the bike, i would be more into fixing it.

Fit the square end of that easyout into a small socket ( maybe 1/4 or 5/16 ) with an extension . You should have enough leverage .

And soak the hell out of it a couple of days with penetrating oil first
