I am new to the site...and very impressed! I have a 1983 CB 1000 Custom that I have had for years...in the last 4 years I have moved quite a few times and have dragged my bike with me as I can't seem to part with it. Overall it is in good shape, but it has spent the last 2 years in my garage not running. It needs things like tires, starter switch, rear turn signal, brakes and rotors and a whole lot of cleanup and TLC.
I am new to fixing bikes and am going to implore the experts here to tell me the best way to prepare myself for the disassembly and cleanup of my bike. I have been told parts are next to impossible to get so I am hoping that your knowledge can assist me in that when needed as well.
Thanks in advance for your patience and information! |

Welcome to the site MVSGUY ...
We have the Factory Service Manual right here in our Technical Documents section . That would be a good place to start . Download it and read it . |

Hey! Welcome. Ask lots of questions. Even though some of us are dumb, no question is.
It's amazing how quickly you'll pick things up. John tells me that in only a few more years, he'll let me hold my own wrench. I can't wait. |

Welcome!
When you get around to thinking about the valves, keep this number handy: .005"
That's the main mistake in the manual and is the desired gap when shimming the valves.
Also....install an inline fuel filter between the tank and carbs as soon as you can. Hard enough to clean the carbs without having to worry about bits from the tank working their way in...... |

if someone drops their wrench [obviously]on purpose, and then asks you to pick it up
make sure to bend your knees and keep your back to the wall |

Thank you all for the wonderful advice! I am especially thankful for the advice on the wrench...the clang of metal on concrete and the soft whispered "oops" will send me running!
I can hardly wait to make the bike run and shine! I downloaded the manual pages and are starting to go through them (some REAL LIGHT READING...ugh....). What do you do when your eyes glaze over?
Thanks again all for the hearty welcome! |
