New CB750C owner

Greetings,

I just picked up a 1982 CB750C from some family members of mine. The bike has some wear and tear and has sat in a shed for at least 5 years. It will need some repairs before I can actually ride it.

I've already rebuilt the carbs and got it running fairly well. I brought it in to a service shop to get it tuned but it ran worse after getting it back. It barely starts now and it backfires fairly regularly. I did find that the ignition assembly was completely saturated with oil so I'm thinking maybe the issue is a leaking oil seal that causes a short.

As you can see, I have some work ahead of me. I'm just hoping I can get it up and running before June rolls around. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome to the site. You will find a wealth of info and experience here. Follow the tips from the guys and trust your own hands to the wrenching. You'll get to know your own machine and save money on labor charges at a shop.

Sounds like you have possible carb sync and vacuum leak issues sight unseen. Oil in the ignition pick up area is normal and necessary, it won't cause a short. Do check your plug wires and caps, though.

Welcome to the asylum jenga.

The ignitionpulsers are supposed to be in oil, that's a good thing, it means you have oil in the motor. Laughing

The thing that stops most barn or shed bikes from running is dirty carbs. Sometimes they can even be corroded beyond repair. The only way to know is to pull them and clean them. Specifically the idle circuits probably are still gunked, and the air cut-off valves probably need replacing or bypassed with a rubber plug..

Most mechanics nowadays are not qualified to work on these old bikes. Sounds like your wasn't either.

Thank you for the welcome. It's good to know that there should be oil on the pulsars. Other than snowmobiles and lawnmowers, i'm new to small engines.

I have spent nearly $250 on new carb parts for the rebuild and everything looked pretty good with the exception of a few rotton composite parts. I don't really see any pitting.

I did find the downloadable service manuals and that will be a life saver! A thousand thank you's go out to the poster.

If you pulled and rebuilt those carbs , there isn't anything on that bike you can't tackle . Smile

The best advice I can pass along is simply : pay attention to details .

These old girls aren't like a briggs that will run on corn liquor and some turnip juice for oil . They can get kinda picky , but once you know how to please them they are all giving .

Welcome to the site, be sure your carbs are pushed on to the intake boots all the way, the rubber boot needs to touch the L bar on the carbs, or you will have a vacume leak and you will have backfireing, running bad, hard starts etc
