Hi, just got my first bike, a 81 cb900c. Lookin forward to learning to ride it but I'm waiting on my helmet to get here and its supposed to rain all weekend... Quick question, do these seats open? I can't seem to find it. Thanks and lookin forward to learnin a lot on this forum.

Welcome!!

The seats are bolted on on these things. Look rearward from the top shock bolt and you will see a bolt under the lip of the seat on each side. Those are them.

There are two bolts, one on each side of the seat.

I think that was my first question on these bikes, too. My '81 is the newest bike I've ever owned and I was used to the easy flip-up hinged seats. Still kinda pisses me off that these aren't like that.... Laughing

I'm thinkin with 45k or 47k on the odo, dependin when the previous owner(s) put them on it prolly already is. For real I'm flat broke after buying this and tryin to get it legal, still not done that. I understand not wanting to lean out the bike that bad but its gotta wait. I'm pretty tough skinned, rag away. Thanks for the advice though, I will work on getting an airbox back on before summer though.

I too am an asshole. And I have found through experience that people who are assholes, and like to admit it, usually tend to get along just fine. It's the ones who think their shit don't stink that are the problems. Rolling Eyes

How much do you think it would run me to rebuild one of these assuming a friend or two and I are doing the labor? I'm real, idk, "not sure" about this motor with the mileage it already has on it.

Rebuilding an engine to stock specs can be done for a couple three hundred bucks if you are doing the work yourself.
But think thousands if you are going to build something like I built for my own bike.
New cam chains & guides, new primary chain and tensioners all the way around will run you that couple three hundred bucks and the gasket sets are another $200.00 +.
APE valve seals are cheap only costing $35.00 for 16 that you need.
You will most likely find at least one pair of rod bearings needing replacement too and they are about $20.00 a piece, not a pair.
Doing it the right way is the only way I do it, all out replacement of changable parts.
A new oil pump is always a good idea.
Money is tight and times are hard but a good running bike rebuilt by yourself is the most rewarding thing to feel. Wink
