thanks badsportster----adjusted the chains, and then adjusted the chains some more last night. decided to fire it up with the valve cover off and the chains run smooth and straight. a little oil never killed anyone!!! it ran alot better and even idled perfectly now that the chains are adjusted properly. ill need new adjusters in a few but the motor is coming out soon to powdercoat the frame anyway so itll work for a few months. now just have to fix the carbs from leaking out the drain holes and im going to get a set of pods and try to tackle that whole fiasco. once its all in working order im going tear it all apart and paint/powder coat. thanks for all the help guys!!!!

Yep. I did that... ONCE. Laughing

Cam lobes can throw some too, if the pools are full.

Actually, it's been said at least 4.38 million times that we don't do pods. Wink

Honestly, don't do pods. Pods will lead to sterility, premature hair loss, erectile dysfunction, migraine headaches, toe fungus, terrible body odor, social anxiety, and chronic eye strain. Don't... just don't.

i know its been said a million times, but instead of saying "we dont do pods" or "its been said a million times" or "search the forum", maybe tell people why and how they can make them work or just say nothing. its comes across as egotistical. it takes just as many key strokes to tell people that pods dont work that well or that there hard to make them work right on stock carbs as it does to tell them its been covered a million times and to search the forum as to why.

Your points are clear (as are the sentiments of hundreds of other forums new guys who have said it before you).

Consider the other side of the coin. This topic has been discussed - literally - more times than anyone here cares to even try to count. Nearly every new guy comes in and says "But why can't you just explain it one more time?". The question becomes: How many "one more times" do you put up with? When you've already have several hundred "one more times", you get to a point where you just don't want to explain it anymore.

The thing about a forum like this is that there is a tremendous amount of information available. Virtually every question you could have about getting these bikes up and running has been chronicled in extensive detail, many times with photographs and clear, concise instructions. All someone has to do is use the search function.

Unfortunately, no one wants to even do that much work anymore.

It's like walking into the world's largest library and then wondering why no one will read the books to you.

One is impossible and the other is...

Seriously, BTDT, we're over it. There is nothing more we're going to be able to tell you. You will either listen and not run pods on these carbs or go ahead and try it, and be on your own. We won't be taking any more time with it, because it's a black hole that sucks everything including lots of time into it.

If you want pods, get some real direct lift carbs like smoothbores or some other kind of carb than these heavy puck CVs that work with pods or velocity stacks(!).

This isn't something we just made up in the last 7 years or so either. It's what I was told in the 80's when I was learning about these bikes from pros. They all said that these bikes just don't do well with pods back then, and they haven't miraculously gotten better.

...

Ask one of the many that have come here and we've helped restore the airbox on their stock carbs if they weren't destroyed in the process, and they are so glad because the bike runs right again.

There is just no gain to be had for us on this, only extra work and aggravation . At best, you might get lucky and get it to run somewhat close to as well with your pods as with the airbox. But if you change elevation, it will probably suck. Why put us through all that hell that we don't want so it will run worse? We're happy to help with all other manner of things, but the pods, no.

And then too, if it's running like ass from the carbs not being right, how you going to fix or diagnose whatever else goes wrong? There is no base line. It's running like crap, you think it's the pods, but then it burns a valve that could have been recognized if the carbs hadn't been screwed with beyond recognition.

Or you ask for help on some issue and we go round and round and it turns out you have pods. We spend enough time working on issues that are difficult enough to troubleshoot over the internet with people of varying skill sets without the pods throwing another variable into it, one that often doesn't work well already, before something else goes wrong. I'm just not interested in trying to figure out a bad spark plug wire, when the base line was already that it didn't run as well as a whole bike before that problem.

try writing the reason pods don't work for 8 years , almost every day to many people and then they tell you off because you're a liar or egotistical

pods should be a word that is part of our word censor, but then we would have members telling us we're egotistical for not allowing the word pod to be on forum

trust me, i love this site. ive been on here for about a week or 2 and you guys have helped a ton- it just bothers me when i see the short handed answers that come across rudely when you guys are the ones who are here on your own free will and are here to help people. it hasent happened to me first hand but through searching stuff on here it seems like every other question-the answer is basically- its been covered-search for it! what hasent been covered at least once!? im a tech at a ford dealer and if i responded to people this way ide be let go instantly. yes i get paid to deal with people and answer there questions, but its your guys choice to be on this forum and "help" or not help people--just my 2 cents!!!! gene-your site is great, and i appreciate your help(along with others).

Exactly. Which is why guys get tired of answering the same questions every single time when it had already been discussed to death. If people would just use the search function and do just a tiny bit of leg work, there would be no need to answer the same questions over and over again.

"RTFM" and "use the search" are a way of life around here, and no amount of admonishment from new members will change it. I learned that the hard way, as will many others.

It's a philosophical issue, really. You're not really "helping" anyone by spoon-feeding them, when there's a whole world of information at their fingertips that's there for the taking if they would just follow the rules and do a search.

We put it plain for all to see in the new members thread and in stickies and other posts that this is how it is.

if the search function was used more instead of posting the same questions that have already been asnswered, the search feature would produce less of those *bogus* threads telling folks to search and more of the golden nuggets threads that deal with the issue you originally searched for

just my 2¢

If you were a tech at a company I ran, and customers thought they were being dismissed out of hand, and it turned out to be true, that certainly could get a canning. But this is not a business, we are not employees or paid, and people looking to do pods are not our customers, nor are any others. This is a hobby site, and is meant to be fun for us, not a burden; we don't take lightly to demands.

This place isn't like every other or maybe any other forum out there. I/we do place prerequisites on our help, and conditions for things we find acceptable. Most of the new arrival type people coming here just have wants and maybe needs, but are not really in a position to be uppity or demanding, especially n00bs that think their needs outweigh mine/ours for being here. We've been doing this a good long time and feel it is sufficient the way do it, or we'd change it.

Another thing is we support each other from a staff perspective. I might do some things differently if I was solo here, but I'm certainly not, and so I go with the prevailing way of doing things and comply with the wishes of others, as do they. We "have each other's backs" when it gets down to it.

Don't get the idea we don't want you to be here though, we do. We just want you to see our side of it.

Now, if you find a member that seems to know enough about pods and seems to want to help you, I suppose you could PM that person and see if he will help, and we won't ever know it. But then if we get complaints, that won't go well either. Personally, I don't do bike tech support by PM, as it says in the NMT.

I suggest you try the Deuces Wild forum ( http://deuceswild.yuku.com/ ) for tuning help if you're bent on running pods with the stock carbs. There are some fine people over there, and they will help you with that issue. I will still be happy to help you with other issues that don't involve the pods on the stock carbs.
