Hi everybody!. I bought 2 days ago a 1981 CB750 Custom that has sat in storage since 1983... 2600 original miles... I can't believe it yet.
Well I guess that I will be asking a lot of questions around. My actual motorcycle is a BMW R1200CLC, a full dressed tourer. But I always wanted to have what I consider the most cool bike in the late seventies.
The bike doesn't run, however the individual that sold it to me said that he made it run for a couple of seconds. The gas tank is perfect on the outside and completely rusted on the inside. Some cosmetic issues with engine paint and on the top valve cover. Front brake is shot, brake fluid looks like molasses.
The good news is that all the clues indicate that the bike is in fact original and unmolested. All the little stickers are in place, the speedo and tach look new, the ignition key is sound and hard to operate, etc. Original tires. Disk brakes have no signs of use.

I'll be learning how to post pictures soon. I have some pics to share.

Thanks all!

yeah that

Welcome. 2600 miles! What a deal!

Get that tank cleaned up if possible, clean the carbs real good, clean out the brake calipers, lines and MC both for front and back, change all the fluids and put on new tires and you should be ready to go! Cool

Welcome to here wave

Be sure to do all the warranty service items on it. They are all in the Honda Shop Manual. You'll also want to get the tank cleaned out and possibly sealed and all the fluids changed before you run it. The brakes will also likely need looking at, and the tires replaced.

There is a thread you need to read, before you start asking a lot of questions that are already answered in it, that will help you get a little indoctrinated to our forum. The New Member's Thread (click here) has the forum rules on various matters like permissible picture posting sizes and what bikes we're about and such, some answers to common questions that n00bies always ask about these bikes, links to the Honda Shop Manuals and so forth.

We require that you read that thread, and do the few housekeeping tasks requested there. It helps make everybody's membership here more useful and pleasant, and less redundant for all. It will also help you get a bit more familiar with some of the nuances and culture of membership here.

Be sure to put your DOHC relevant bike model in your sig and turn it on both places (1) in the profile and (2) in the reply box when posting. You'll know more about that after reading the info... Be sure to check it to make sure the sig is actually working, too.

If you have questions about any of this please ask.

If you are seeing this and you did put your signature in, you probably didn't do the second step that's required and click the "Attach signature (signatures can be changed in profile)" box when posting your message. You can edit your posts using the edit button in the upper right hand corner of your post and turn on that checkbox, however. Wink

Welcome voipwizard! Try using Evapo-rust for the tank rust removal. It worked great for me. Paint safe! I didn't seal my tank, just have kept it full of stabalized gas when stored for any period.

Good luck on your find. Very Happy

Thanks for the warm welcome guys. It comes to me in a kinda difficult time since we sold our house having in mind to purchase another one, the sale was very smooth, my purchase is pretty much shot. To make the story short my BMW and the 750 are both sitting in the garage in my office. My next step to start the restoration process is to start buying parts (like M/C and Caliper Rebuild kits, Cables, etc.) prior to get settled somewhere. But the restoration is not going to happen anytime soon. Anyway, I just finished reading Frank's long post (red one) and I found several others that you can really miss.

When gathering parts, it's generally best to buy parts fairly close to the time you will use them if possible. That way there is no question about warranty coverage, the dealer where you buy them is more likely to still be there, parts swapping for the wrong or broken parts is easier, etc.

I agree with Gene. Most parts will come in within a few days of ordering so no need to "stock up" What you can do is start shopping, I paid like $67.00 for my last "A" gasket set (that's almost all of the upper gaskets), $16 for fork seals and wipers. Look hard enough and long enough and the deals will pop up so I bookmark that supplier. Many times just because it is listed on E-Bay doesn't mean that they have only one and that isn't their regular price
