The mythical barn find (well, really it was in a garage!).

Just purchased an immaculate '81 CB900C. It's like a time warp. 34000km by the original owner. Hondaline hard bags & fairing, owner's and service manual, and the stuff removed for the fairing install. NOS exhaust. Coupla Shoei helmets. Even a full tank of fresh gas. Started right up and sounded great!

Only fault (so far) is that the rear brake caliper appears to be sticking. I haven't studied the caliper yet, so I don't know if it's the slides (if it has 'em) or the piston. I'll find out tomorrow.

Let the fun begin!

A stuck caliper is no big deal.

So how much did you pay for it? That's the question.

Welcome to the forum. Check out the stickies in the Welcome and Forum Announcements section.

New members buy the drinks, so you're up. We know you have money, too, 'cause you just bought a bike.

Negra Modelo for me, please.

Hey, I like Negra Modelo too. Got started on it when I was down in Playa del Carmen for a six week gig.

Welcome to here cuklz wave

Be sure to read the new members thread with the rules and some other handy info in it.

There are a bunch of threads about caliper cleaning. Be sure to pump out the pistons with the master cylinder before disconnecting. In fact, I usually don't disconnect the caliper at all.

Thanks for the welcome, fellas. I've been lurking on-and-off for several months.

Yeah, nbhab, I'm on the left coast, in the idyllic interior, eh?

Buddy, you show up at my doorstep with a case of (good) beer, and I'll tell ya how much I paid for it. It wasn't a steal, but it's good value for the money. Outside of attention to the caliper, it needs nothing.

Small potatoes, Frank; it doesn't count until you can feel the heat from 2000 feet and it takes 'em half an hour with the airport crash trucks to extinguish the grass fire!

I got the caliper off and apart today. Fortunately, the cylinder bore is relatively clean, but the piston is just starting to get pitted and has some odd dingleberries on it. I've ordered another, along with the seals. I'll review the caliper threads.

Incidentally, and for what it's worth, I tried Pinesol on the '750C carbs when I rebuilt them a short while ago, and found that the brass parts turned black. I was disappointed with that, so I dumped them (individually) into the Gunk Hydroseal II that I usually use, and they cleaned right up. Hydroseal II isn't as good as the original Hydroseal, which would (and did) strip layers of skin off yer hands if ya weren't careful. Blame the EPA for pacifying Hydroseal.

I was going to take a different tack on motorcycles; a Varadero or maybe the new Yamaha Super Tenere (rumoured to be introduced in Kanada next year), or a Beemer, but I'm rather fond of the way I can motor away off idle with my four-cylinder bikes. The '900C was a LOT less expensive and will probably do everything I need it to, for as long as I need to do it.

Images to follow.

Ya, I've got some old school carb cleaner that I will soak my brass parts in too.

2000'!!! Got a link? Here hold my beer and watch this shit. Wink

While you are watching that shit, maybe you'd like to fill in your location with something that makes sense to every one else here.

I've heard that before Laughing

Check your valve clearances at least.

Should be .004"-.006" not the .002" the manual says.

Couldn't find the video from the Abbotsford airshow, but this wall of fire was even longer, although not as high!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aCysm0nWBwc

The valves are quieter on the 900 than they are on the 750s but I'll be checking three and a half sets of valves this fall after riding season is over. I don't have any extra shims at this time; I suppose I really should get one of those starter sets, but I spent all my pension money on the 900.

Happy now, Gene?
