I just picked up a dohc 750 in a custom frame. full rat chopper. i was hoping to find a link to id my motors year by serial number so i can get to work. this is the first bike ive put in my collection that i dont have specific origin on. any help would be greatly appreciated.

If you want to do power hop ups, the 750 engine is pretty much identical across the 5 platforms it takes in the DOHC CB750 realm.
What color is your engine's original, silver or black?
The 750 Custom engines were silver until 82 when they became black and there is no appreciable differences internally, a CB750 is a CB750 is a CB750.

It is black. im looking to get all info i can as i have no cdi,wiring ect. its going to stay absolutely bare bones with minimal everything. headlight brake/run light and motor. If its deletable it is deleted.

So yeah, unless the motor was painted, it's undoubtedly an 82. But other than color, the differences in years of the 750 motors is minimal like Ray said. The real black engines were like a powder coat paint, much more durable than regular paint.

If it's an 82 frame the brakes should have dual pot calipers too, the best of the years.

BTW, the stock ignition is not CDI or Capacitive Discharge Ignition, it's called TPI or Transistorized Pointless Ignition. The ProcomEng modules are better than the old stock ones, better starting and high speed performance.

Thanks guys. Im far from a mechanic but i can usually bang my head against the wall til i figure things out. ill get some pics posted as soon as i get back to my school where its stored. Taking paint and body down here in FL. Gonna turn this thing into a beast.
