It is very easy to search for more than one search term and drill down to fewer returned items. You need to use the "Search for all Terms" button, otherwise it will just return all of the posts with the mention of any of the words. What you want is to limit the results to posts that contain all of the terms in each post.

Keywords must have at least 3 characters. Keywords put in the box with less than 3 letters will be ignored.

You can also search just for one member's post on the keyword subjects, or without any keywords if you want all the posts from an author, by just adding the member's username to the author's field.

Go ahead and try the search below on your own computer and then try it a few more times and change some of the options around each time so you can see what the changes are that some of the various options make:

Image

I also use the "Display all results as Posts" button so it takes me right to the very post I'm searching for instead of the thread, and I ask for the first 1000 characters of posts so I can usually determine if it's the right post without actually having to click to it, or read the whole post.

There are also other options, if you know the post you're looking for is very old, you can sort by the ascending order of posts instead of descending, and many other options. It is a very powerful tool if you just take some time to learn to use all the features.

So, if you're not sure of any particular post that you're looking for, but you are just searching for information, you would still use multiple search terms, just be sure to use the "Search for all Terms" button.

Use the "Display all results as Posts" button for this.

Select "Return first: All Available characters of posts" so you'll see entire posts instead of partials, or as in the above example it's set to "Return first: 1000 characters of posts" as the search can be set to show various maximum partial sizes of posts with that drop down.

Yeah, good point.

It's also exactly the same search engine as so many smaller PHP based forums use. It's not uncommon at all. Even the vBulletin forum software search engine is a lot like it, almost exactly the same, so it's a skill worth developing.

I use it all the time on a lot of different computer forums, and was already familiar with it before I ever found CB forums, because I used to hang out at computer building forums. I still do somewhat.

It's very useful and powerful enough, the user just needs to try out some of the different modes and switches available on it. That page of searching options is there for a reason. Laughing

Yes, the terminology used makes a big difference because the search engine is very literal. So we insist on uniformity here, and that we all use the right words for important terms in order to help the site work properly, and so noobs and others get to the nirvana of ultimate understanding more easily. Laughing

Here's another invaluable bit of info for using google. I use this so I don't have to post those screen widening links that often come up with mile of variables and crap in them.

i also try to split junk from tech threads,

it's easy to be chumy chummy and get comfortable with guys we just spent 9 years or so with

we're a family of sorts, scewed up as that sounds, but it is true

i may sound like a terminology demon, but years at michelin building tires, also being a small engine tech or at a gm dealer repairing vehicles; where terms and units of measurement had to be precise, has it's merits and a spot on a tech/build site

Of the 20 or so forums I'm a member of this is the only one I can't search "topic titles only" on. Is this correct or am I missing something?

Apologies in advance but I don't see any option there that would allow me to search only in the titles.

That's not an option here, and I checked other forums like CBXworld, and it's not an option there either. These are small phpBB forums, we don't have a staff of programmers. The search is a standard module that I've seen and used on dozens of forums.

Also, the titles of threads often end up having little to do with what the thread ends up being about. It's likely much more useful to search for keywords contained in the thread.

As I said above, we end up with good information about unrelated issues in threads with unrelated titles. I saw something that was decent information just a day or two ago in a for sale listing that was not related to the listing. A title search would not find it, but a keyword search would.

If you know the exact title of a thread, you can put that in and return results as topics. Be sure to hit the "Search for all terms" button.
