Needless to say, I'm never taking by bike to a shop again!

I've found myself saying the exact same thing after about $600 dollars in shop repairs that have yielded little or no significant improvements on my bike. I'd rather have the satisfaction of knowing everything about my motor so I can be the one to fix it next time.

That being said, I will probably not even be able to ride my bike much this summer as I will not be able to begin dismantling it until the middle of June. And how much I can do at the time is going to depend on cash flow.

Just pull the engine from the frame like you are supposed to and do the job the correct way.
