Been riding about 12 years, recently sold my VTX, and wanted an older bike in decent shape. Saw a 1982 750K on CL, (not full stock, runs great, 25K miles: $1500) and wanted to find out some pros/cons to these bikes.

I'll be lurking these forums to educate myself, but wanted to say hey while I'm here. As far as maintenence, I can turn a wrench, but I can't replace an engine. I'm ore scared of screwing something up, but I love tinkering.

EDIT: I know I saw a link to a "Bike Buying Guide" on here somewhere, but can't find it now... anyone know where it is?

Thanks,
Pete

Post a link to the CL ad. In my opinion $1500 sounds a bit on the high side but if it doesn't need anything you may be OK. Just need to decide if it's the bike for you. The "not full stock" part is what makes me wonder. I would rather pay a little more for a bike that doesn't need anything. On the other hand if you are looking for a project then look for something for a lot less. On the pros and cons side I will defer to the gurus on here except to say that parts for the CB series in general are plenty and those that I've had are bullet proof as long as you keep up w/regular maintenance.

The charging system is somewhat notorious for being weak, but overall the DOHC's are solid bikes.

Called the guy, left a VM, and no reply... I re-checked the CL ad, and it's been deleted... Sad

BUT there is a 1981 CB900 for $1000 with 45K miles... doesn't specify C or F, but pics look like exaust is a 4 into 2 (F, right?) He says "Runs great, but could use a tune up"

I'll print the check-list and take a look at it.

I found it. It's a 900C. Not C pipes, seat looks recovered, no passenger grab bar, aftermarket mirrors, reworked side cover. If it runs great why does it need a tune up? BUYER BEWARE? Just from what is there, and not, and the post in general it doesn't sound or look like a $1000 bike to me. Not enough info or pics. To me it looks and sounds like a project. Good luck and let us know what the story is.

Good points, and thanks for the info, gentlehawkjay. Those are some things I never thought about. When I emailed him, he replied "Call the number". I can understand that, with so many yahoos on CL...

Funny thing... I just checked again, and the '82 CB750 that I originally saw there is back up! $1500 red, black pipes, saddlebags, windshield...

http://spacecoast.craigslist.org/mcy/2379233518.html

Obviously, the seat is not stock (Corbin?) But, I could give a *bleep* about it being stock... I'd like a good running bike that won't tear up my back when I ride it.

NOW... I just need to see how it runs...

I'd be concerned about the "CUSTOM TUNED" exhaust and would want to know exactly what was done. If carb work was included, run away. Also, would want to how that seat combo, which appears a bit cobbled together, is mounted and feels to you.
