OK, if you use the character map (charmap.exe) program that comes with Windows, you can copy and paste any of the extended characters available in a font. Charmap.exe has come standard with windows since Windows 3.0 I think, which was the first widely distributed and sold Windows version.
Charmap.exe is usually in the system32 directory, but unless you select certain options in the original installation, there is no start menu pointer installed anymore. Instead of trying to remember all those codes, I just use charmap.exe and keep a shortcut to it in my Quick Launch Toolbar.
Use of some of the more common extended characters is supported in our forum software. Alt+176 (°) certainly is, other handy ones for us in North America are Alt + 163 (£) the Pound Sterling symbol, Alt + 162 (¢), Alt + 165 (¥), and the common vulgar fractions like Alt + 188 (¼), Alt + 189 (½) and Alt + 190 (¾) . One I like is Ω (Omega), but there is no Unicode ansi code or Alt Code, however it is availailable in our forum software.
You need to be careful and test the extended character you try to use. Some of them will just display a Square if there is no symbol in the character set for the forum font.
Back in the DOS days we had books and cheat sheets to access the extended character set, and the Alt + 4 digit code is a throwback to that and other ansi coding tricks. It's actually a 4 digit code, but the leading zero can be omitted.
This isn't really a computer forum, but sometimes those old tricks come in handy, even for bikers. Instead of trying to remember all those codes, try out charmap.exe. That's my 2¢. |

Alt162 is not ¢, you need to hit Alt155 for the ¢ at least on my key board. If I hit Alt162 ó is the character that comes up.
Alt167 º
Alt155 ¢ |

The Alt key trick doesn't even work on my desktop here at home, works on others though. The character map will show you all sorts of cool symbols though.
Not all Windows PC are the same. There are several versions of XP, many versions of Vista, This PC here is on Windows 2000 Pro. Then there are all the languages that are installed. The Alt +4 digit code will render different characters depending on the installation. The character map should sort that all out, and keep things somewhat uniform in an international arena. |

That's interesting, for ° I'd use Alt176, I get § for Alt167.
Come to find out that it depends what font you're using. Apparently the ansi alt code talks to the current default font on your machine. |

Maybe the key board has something to do with it? |

It depends on if you're application is using the ANSI or OEM character set:

Basically....go with what works for you. There won't be a quiz... |

Yeah, that explains two different sets, but I've found more positions than that even depending on the font. Since I use numerous different computers regularly, i just rely on the character map utility to keep it straight. |

For the degree symbol ° I've always used Alt + 248. Give it a try. |
