Hello all,
I recently took my motorcycle training classes here in WA and didn't have a bike (my wife did however) I currently work as a barista and was chatting with a customer and he offered to sell me a bike he had sitting around (covered, 7yrs), non-running. After looking at it, I ended up getting a 80' Honda 900 custom for $300 (seemed hard to go wrong), which turns out is a fascinating bike IMHO.
I got it started up with the help of my neighbor, but it leaked gas all over the place. I'm sure you can guess where.
After fiddling with the air box and intake boots I remember thinking that I would spend a good amount of money to get rid of that crap. Of course I've seen all the pod love here (sarcasm) and it seems I will need to stay with original stuff and just have to adapt.

Things I'm working on, the rear hub, as a bearing was blown out completely, hub kit, and bearing retainer insert . The carburetor, I've got the Randakk's rebuild kit on the way along with a some new shiny screws.
The rebuild seems daunting, not for number of steps, but for how long it will take to clean, and methodically install all the do-hikies (I'm sure ill have questions)

Some of my history, my dad was an auto mechanic all growing up so I was around motor/carb rebuilds, grease, the smell of a mechanic shop takes me back. In addition, I was a bicycle mechanic for three yrs at a shop, where I got a lot of hands on with a lot of DH, road, and recreation bikes where I became very familiar with suspension, bearings, and cable knowledge. So it seems even though I have never worked on motorcycles its a bit of a marriage of the two worlds.
Now lets see if I can get some picks of my bike up here.

welcome
we , as honda calls the rubber mounts between the carbs and airbox insulators, if that is what you were talking about

our search engine uses exact terms

we have a plethora of info on site, if your insulators are hardened , they should be replaced while new can be obtained

it has been some time, this is for me as much as you guys, life changes a lot some times. Different woman, different job, but still have the bikes!

The one I am trying to get running is an 81 900c. I received the duel mikuni vm 36 kit from sports moto, they are great so fare, but then again it is now able to run to some degree.

It seems that when I get the time to repair or make functional something, some other thing needs help. Additionally this bike experience seems like an endless trial and error, search, read, youtube, rinse and repeat x10.

I am on my second stator, its new and isn't charging the bike, not sure why. Re-research to follow.
The carb kit should have been tuned but it doesn't seem to be running correctly (fully charged batt). I previously checked the shims when I replaced one of the over head cams. Now I'm wondering if its my plugs.

Its has set for a bit since I last touched them and the rear brake is dragging, additionally the stem on the rear tire is leaky.

I just want to get it running correctly, then begin to fix it up that's all.

I now realize I have two independent carps running each half of the engine.

Anyone live locally that loves to wrench and teach? lol.

Good to be back though honestly, a sign life may be leveling off a bit.

Cheers and thanks for the help

That's odd, Most of the time the issue is the rotor, not the stator.

Check out the charging system info in my sig, also:
