Hello,

I'm considering the purchase of a 1980 CB900 for $150 - no title. It is missing the side covers and the handlebar switch gear. Motor is not locked up. All for $150. Should I nab it or look for something else? I see a lot of stuff available on Ebay for it.

The bike was originally sidelined because it would die shortly after completing engine warm up but ran OK prior to that. The current possessor of the bike thinks its an electrical / electronic problem but of course, it could be something simple - needs a valve adjustment or the fuel tank is trapping a vacuum -- no fuel to the carbs.

The bike had begun some kind of conversion and is missing some portion of seat frame though I'm told the original seat still mounts properly. I have not seen the bike yet so a lot of this is conjecture. It also has a different model fuel tank though you can't tell from the picture.

The bike has electronic ignition. Does anybody make replacement parts? I'm assuming its a CDI ignition bike?????

Many thanks,

Rick

The mo$t you could lo$e is 150$ (plu$ what you $pend on diagnos$ing/correcting the problem$) Wink

It looks like from your collection you have some experience with motorcycles so if you want something to keep you busy why not go for it?

Can you get a title for it if you want one?

Even if getting a title in Louisiana is a major PITA, $150 is a great price for a parts bike. For $150, you can't go wrong!

I have had very good success with the Vermont Method of getting titles here in Louisiana. I still need to run the VIN for theft.

He also has a CB650 with no title for another $150 but it has already begun the transformation to being a hardtail. I'm much less attracted to it.

It is probably a good deal. I hate the fact that the frame was hacked.

You can always post in the wanted section here if you decide to buy the bike. eBay is a good source for parts but a lot of members here have parts too and might be more trustworthy and responsive to questions you might have.

No fuel to the carbs could be a dirty in tank filter or air bubbles in the line holding back fuel and maybe a bad or clogged vent in the cap.

Check out the Procom link and SeanG's new to you guide in my sig.

Also..............

Welcome here and enjoy the site

Hello,

One cylinder was full of water. The rear fender is missing along with the speedometer cluster and some kind of front fairing. Those really expensive rear air shocks are also gone but there is something in their place.

None of this appears to be hideously expensive to replace though. I will go look at it hopefully next weekend. Maybe it'll still be there.

Rick

The cylinder is a concern but everything else is not so bad. It can be done.

I wouldn't be surprised if you spent more than a thousand dollars getting that bike on the road and not exactly the way you want it .

But , if that's what you're looking for ...

I was with you until you said, "water in a cylinder". At that point, you might be looking at some severe motor work. And these big fours are lot more expensive to tear down and rebuild than the single thumpers you list in your signature. Look at the price of a head gasket for an idea of the difference in cost.

I'm not trying to disparage your collection by the way. I have a 68 CT90 and love it! I just want to make sure you know what you're in for. It's a completely different game when you get to the big motors.

Can you show us any pictures of the CB900?

Hello,

It's a Craigs List post - one picture only. Yes, I'm a bit discouraged about the cylinder.

Looks like a Parts bike to me. Looks like it's missing the carbs too and with water in the cylinder, that engine probably needs to be rebuilt. If you're set on getting a CB900, buy this one and an other with the parts you need, combine and build a running bike, financing the build by selling off the extras. I'm doing that now with a cb750 and did that with my last build.

Hello Grepper,

Your vision is perfect. He sent me additional pictures today and indeed, the carbs are gone.

This bike will not be following me home.

Water in the cylinder probably means water in the crankcase. I'd pass.

Yeah, even as a parts bike it's pretty poor. Water in the motor means you might not be able to use any of its internals. The original tank is gone, original exhaust is gone, carbs are gone, rear frame is altered, head light gone, side covers gone.

Basically all that's left is a non-titled rolling chassis.
