Hi guys, name is Doug from NH, USA.
Picking up my first Honda ever, had a lot of Yamaha bikes.
Anyway it's a 1980 cb900c. Custom yellow/black paint.
4to1 exhaust, pods, 2 seats, running and inspected.
My first question to you guys is this.
The alternator cover had been tightened too hard, and
Cracked the alternator housing. That was years ago. Now
The case has a small hole where it had cracked. About 1/2"
Round. Can I jb weld it, or do you have any other suggestions?
It's obviously not open to the oil etc, just the alternator.
I figure I'd remove the cover and internals, wad up some jb weld,
Let it cure and grind/sand it down.
Other ideas?
Thanks in advance! |

Welcome to the site Doug ...
If you haven't read the following page , now is the time .

If you run into problems with any of that , Please let us know . Thanks .
I'd leave the stator mounted in the cover and work the JB where it needs to be . |

You could get an aluminum welder to TIG it and then sand it down and polish. It would look like new. Just make sure he does not use too much heat at one time and warp it.

Thanks OldTimer that's a great idea. I am just worried about that because of the heat, it's very brittle looking metal. Should I stick with the JBweld, or do you think a welder could tell me whether on not to go ahead with welding? It's probably just the edges that look brittle because they are rough and have been open / cracked for YEARS. |
