New CB Rider

Hi all. Just finally caught the bug to ride and got my brother's '80 CB750c running. The sucker has been sitting in my garage collecting dust for 5 years and he said if you fix it, it's yours. So now she breathes and is legally mine. Very Happy

Didn't take much more than a battery and a carb cleaning to fire it up. I was amazed how easy it was to get it running after looking at it for sooo long. I also did an oil change after a few miles too. I have a used front tire to put on and i need to get a tube and a new chain. Now looking for chains I've seen prices from $18 to $122. At this point I'm pretty strapped for cash and a pussy footing new rider. Will the $18 JC Whitney chain get me by? I'm not trying to pull wheelies or smoke the tire. I am just dieing to Ride!

and don't want to snap my rusty kinked chain going to work. And I wouldn't mind going over 30mph not in fear.
Also my front brake is really sqeakin. Is that something where I can just sand the pads and lube the plates like a car to try to quiet it or do i just need to replace the pads and maybe rotor?

That $18 chain will do you good enough . I run industrial chain from a tractor supply store that I buy in 10' ( $15) lengths and cut to proper length .

Give your brakes the car fix . The service limit on the pads is .24" ( 1/4" )

You should download the Factory service manual from our Tech Docs section .

Thanks for the reply. I looked online at local ag stores, (rural king, farm & fleet) and the sizes are in pitch. The manual says a rk50mo & did50v, and every where else I look says 530 x 106 link. What size might I be looking for from and industrial stand point?

I tried to search the forum and didn't come up with much on making chains. Maybe its basic for most but new to me. Maybe most people just buy what it calls for. lol

I run 50HD . 50 standard will work , too .

Just run the rear axle forward . Run the new chain through and around the sprockets . Mark which link has to ground off . Cut the chain and insert the master link . Adjust the axle for proper tension .

Awesome. Thanks! Found chain and a link for $25 after tax. Can't beat that really. Can you get 2 chains out of a 10' roll?

I'm glad that you didn't buy the chain from J.C., I got one and it really did fall apart! Then they refused to honor their warranty

i used chain from the JD dealer

it lasts well

if it can handle a pto putting out over 100hp while turning manure spreader augers ..it should last

I actually checked there because of a post you made about getting sprockets from there. Thanks for the heads up Wink

All 6 reviews say they're good chains.

So here's my first picture attempt

Boy the flash really brings out the rust. haha

As you can see its due for some tires. I have an oil leak from the valve cover too. Seems to be the perfect excuse to check the valve clearance.
